Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition Launches 21 New
Share Our Strength Operation Frontline Classes in Atlanta
Program Offers Economical Cooking Education for Low-Income Families
Atlanta, GA (October 15, 2009) - The Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition (GPAN) will launch 21 new classes for Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline, a program nationally sponsored by ConAgra foods that connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget, at a special open house on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church Family Life Center in Decatur, Ga.
The open house event will feature a presentation by spokesperson Bren Herrera, a self-taught personal chef who began mirroring her mother in the kitchen when she was only eight years old and recently cooked with Chef Joel Robuchon, food and travel writer and the editor of her own food blog, Flanboyant Eats. A special cooking demonstration will teach guests how to make fresh and delicious fruit and yogurt parfaits, a healthy and economical recipe that is taught at the Eating Right class, by Chef Dada Freer. Attendees also will be able to experience a class with a chef and nutritionist firsthand with Operation Frontline program participants, as well as learn of the variety of ways they can donate their time and talents to Operation Frontline. A special discussion with Dr. Jimmy Calloway, executive director of GPAN, will educate guests on the importance of Operation Frontline in Atlanta, the state and nationwide. Following the open house, an orientation and introductory training session will take place for attendees interested in volunteering with Operation Frontline.
“With the nation facing increased rates of hunger and obesity, there is considerable need for nutrition education among low-income families,” said Dr. Jimmy Calloway. “These families are less likely than those with higher incomes to have a healthy diet, to know about the links of diet and health and to have the resources to properly feed themselves and their families. Through Operation Frontline, we are able to reach out to these families and help them live healthier, happier lives.”
Currently, GPAN utilizes six specialized curricula, each of which teaches hands-on meal preparation, practical nutrition information and food budgeting skills. All participants receive recipes and take-home materials from the day’s lessons, and adult and teen participants take home a bag of groceries each week to practice what they have learned. Once a week for six weeks, participants gather for a two-hour class led by the same chef and nutritionist for the six-week duration, creating a connection between the participants and class leaders. Since 1993, Operation Frontline and its hundreds of volunteer instructors have conducted more than 4,300 cooking-centered nutrition and financial-planning courses and helped more than 51,500 low-income families. Current curricula include the following:
Eating Right, offered in eight languages, teaches low-income adults about healthy meal preparation and sensible shopping on a limited budget. Start by Eating Right is an addendum to the Eating Right curricula that focuses on the special nutritional needs of children ages zero to three.
Eating Well teaches people living with HIV and AIDS and their caretakers about healthy meal preparation and sensible shopping using recipes and information specific to their special nutritional needs.
Kids Up Front teaches children ages 8 to 13 about healthy eating and provides simple recipes children can prepare themselves.
Power of Eating Right teaches teenagers how to make healthy food choices and prepare healthy meals and snacks.
Side By Side brings school-age children and their families together to learn about healthy eating and the importance of family mealtime.
Step Up to Eating Right teaches teen parents how to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious foods for themselves and their babies.
Saving Smart, Spending Smart teaches basic household budgeting, banking, credit, and how to shop wisely to those with low incomes.
The open house event will be held Thursday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church Family Life Center, 240 Candler Road, Atlanta, Ga. It is being co-hosted by the DeKalb County Board of Health. For more information on Operation Frontline and the open house event, call Karen Kierath at 678.476.3766 or visit <www.g-pan.org>.
